Running Housie/Bingo

Is Housie the same as Bingo? The simple answer Yes! The game game “House” is also known as Bingo, however the term “Housie” is more commonly used in New Zealand. “Housie” is believed to have originated from the British troops in World War I when they played “Housey Housey” a form of bingo – of which the term “House” was called when you filled the board. Housie and Bingo both refer to the same game.

How is a Housie game played in NZ? Bingo or Housie is a game where players buy tickets which have a selection of unique numbers. A caller will then announce to the players what the winning pattern will be for the game (ie. all numbers on a top line of the ticket). The caller then starts to randomly draw and call out numbers of which players then mark off the corresponding number on their ticket. The first player to mark off all the numbers on their ticket and matches the nominated pattern will then call “BINGO!” or “HOUSE!”. A detailed version of the rules can be found on https://www.dia.govt.nz

Do I need a licence to run Housie? Anyone can run housie, however depending if you are an individual, not-for-profit group or society depends on what you can do with the money, your prize value limits and if you need a licence. You do not require a licence if total value of prizes for a session is $5,000 or less, and turnover of the housie tickets is $25,000 or less. If the total value of prizes for a session of housie games is more than $5,000 your group must be a corporate society and it will need to obtain a licence. More detail can be found at https://www.dia.govt.nz

What do I do with the money from selling housie tickets? For a Not-for-profit group (can be unincorporated) or Corporate Society at least 70 % of the money collected must go in prizes. You can only take money out for your operating costs; the rest goes to your fundraiser. Anyone else running a session can’t make any profit and all money must be used for prizes.
